Photography Class

Teacher: Sandra Leenerts

The Photography Classes at Kofa High School are in the Fine Arts Department. Students work in the traditional darkroom and learn how to create their photographs step by step from exposing the film, to developing the film, then using the darkroom to create their photographic art. Some have suggested this form of photography is fast becoming obsolete due to the technology of the digital camera. However, there is room for both. When photography was first invented, there was talk of the art of painting becoming obsolete. One could simply take a photograph of the subject and no longer need to spend the time, effort, and energy necessary to create the images on canvas. The same is true for traditional photography.

Students learn the "Elements of Art" and the "Principles of Design" that transcend both traditional and digital photography and that are fundamental to creating photographic art as opposed to a snapshot. In the darkroom, they learn the art of "painting with light" along with the discipline, etiquette, and time management skills required to produce a quality print.

Each year our students represent Kofa High School in the Photography Exhibit at the Yuma County Fair. Many of our graduating seniors carry on their study of the photographic arts when they enter college or university.

The class demands much of a student, but the effort is worth the time and energy put forth in creating a work of art of which the student can be proud.
